Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, the most commonly used probiotics, help colonize the intestines and mediate the permeability of epithelial cells. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 22 adults, daily supplementation with a probiotic containing Lactobacillus acidophilus supported a healthy microflora balance.*
